Turnkey IT-infrastructure implementation for Sochi International Airport

Challenge

As part of the preparations for hosting the 2014 Olympics, Sochi airport planned a construction of a new passenger terminal. While constructing the terminal, the key task was to equip the facility with the very latest IT hardware which would allow it to handle up to 3800 passengers per hour in accordance with global quality standards and the requirements of the International Olympic Committee.

Project delivery

The technology deployment project started at the new terminal in September 2008.

The first stage of the project involved implementation of the basic IT-infrastructure including:

At the next stage, Asteros specialists conducted a whole range of work on the “aviation” component:

Within the project, 37 basic and specialized aviation systems were implemented to ensure business continuity of the airport.

Asteros supported the client in project finance and accommodated Sochi Airport with $12+ M loan.

Project results

The airport welcomed the first passengers through the doors of the new terminal in May, 2010.

While working on the project, specialists sought to maximize the options for expanding the deployed IT-systems in the future, which will allow the airport to effectively develop its infrastructure. After receiving the first passengers in the new terminal, the passenger traffic capacity of the airport will increase from 900 to 1600 per hour. In 2012 the airport plans to serve up to 2500 passengers per hour and during the Olympics this figure will rise to 3800.

Sochi International Airport is one of the most important transport hubs in the region and in the country as a whole and the airport must be working efficiently for the 2014 Olympics to be a success. We regard the reconstruction of Sochi Airport and the creation of a world-class air complex as one of our largest and most prestigious investment projects. While constructing the new terminal we paid special attention to creating the technological IT-component which would support growing passenger traffic and the rapid pace of development at the airport. We called in our strategic IT-development partner Asteros to carry out the project as they have done similar work at Russias southern airports and have world-class experts in the air transport sector
