Asteros forecasts Russian IT services market will grow by around 10% in 2010

February 03, 2010

The Asteros Group has announced its own forecast for IT-service market development in 2010. Contrary to the optimistic projections of analysts, the IT-services market in Russia will develop at a relatively slow pace (less than 10%) according to Asteros. The IT-outsourcing sector will show the most significant growth – up to 15%. However the IT-services market as a whole is expected to make a full recovery only in 2012.

According to Asteros Group estimates, the size of the Russian IT-services market in 2010 will be around 4.3-4.5 billion dollars and growth will not exceed 10% even if economic conditions are favourable. In 2009, the IT-services market suffered a 30-33% fall and therefore it can be expected to recover to pre-crisis levels no earlier than 2012.

The development of different segments of the Russian IT-services market will differ noticeably. The “powerhouse” in terms of growth will be IT-outsourcing, a segment that is set to increase in size by 10-15% in 2010. This can be explained by the fact that in conditions of financial restriction and cutbacks, outsourcing is a way of reducing IT-support costs. The Systems Integration sector will show moderate growth of 5-10%. The demand for IT-consulting services is set to remain at 2009 levels, and the Business Applications Deployment segment will grow by just 5%.

In terms of spending structure, the situation within the Russian IT market will not change dramatically in comparison with 2009. The lion’s share of company IT-budgets (up to 55%) will be spent on supporting and maintaining existing IT-infrastructures. The reason for this is that the number of companies that are struggling for survival still outweighs the number of businesses that are focusing on continued development. Spending on modernization in 2010 will account for approximately 35% of IT-budgets. This will increase mainly due to the backlog of demand for modernization from 2009 being carried forward to 2010. Investment in new innovations will remain at last year’s level and will not exceed 10%. It looks unlikely that there will be a surge of interest in new innovations and this includes the wide-scale adoption of technologies such as SOA and SaaS.

Services related to personal data protection will be in demand in 2010. Virtualization technologies will be in particularly high demand. The crisis has made virtualization popular as the most effective means of reducing the cost of running and maintaining IT-infrastructures while economizing on hardware purchasing.

In December 2009, Asteros Group conducted a research into the most sought-after IT-services of 2009-2010. 104 clients took part in the survey. The results of the study show that clients are prioritizing: security systems, IT-infrastructure, telecommunications solutions and outsourcing. At the same time, consulting services and ERP-system implementation will be in lower demand.*

“In comparison with 2009, which was dominated by the crisis, 2010 will see a moderate recovery in growth. The main reason for this is that the IT-budgets of many companies are still severely restricted due to anti-crisis measures. The introduction of innovations and the spread of new technologies will mainly take place in more financially stable companies with modern management teams who are using the crisis to gain control over large shares of the market.” – Mikhail Erenburg, Asteros Group President.
