Asteros modernizes the IT-platform for Gazprom Space Systems
January 27, 2010
B.A.C. (part of the Asteros Group) has completed the second stage of a project to create a disaster-proof IT-platform for Gasprom Space Systems’ new telecommunications center. This IT-infrastructure, designed for 250 users, was launched in record time without interrupting the work of the satellite communications operator.
Gasprom Space Systems provides satellite communications for all Gasprom subsidiaries, for the ministries and departments of Russia’s district authorities, as well as for domestic and foreign companies. The fail-safe operation of information systems, which serve terrestrial and non-terrestrial hardware, is vital to the work of this company.
The satellite communications operator’s strategy is focused on expanding its range of available services and increasing its activities on the domestic market. In order to assist with this development, the decision was taken to relocate the company’s telecommunications center (or tele-port) from their rented property in Korolev to their own premises in Shelkovo, near Moscow, where the company’s telecommunications resources are concentrated. In order to provide the necessary level of performance and reliability at the telecommunications center, a project was started to modernize the company’s IT-infrastructure.
During the first stage of the project, Asteros specialists designed a system which included these subsystems:
- virtualization;
- disaster recovery measures;
- internet access;
- data back-up and recovery;
- anti-virus protection;
- data security;
- IT-infrastructure management and monitoring.
During the second stage of work, a basic IT-infrastructure was built (local computer network and internet connection) in two company buildings.
The time taken to transfer all computational power from one premises to another was of vital importance to the client. In order to guarantee the timely reopening of the office and the launch of the new IT-infrastructure, a preliminary “pilot test zone” was established in Korolev which was used for testing and configuring the necessary hardware. Thanks to this rigorous preliminary preparation, the IT-infrastructure was launched at the new premises in Shelkovo according to plan.
At present, the IT-system supports 250 users. When the project is completed, the system will unite three company buildings and the number of user work stations will increase to 800.
“Satellite communications has long been a vital element in the work of the Gasprom holding and our other clients. Therefore, during this project, it was important for us to lay down a high-tech foundation for the development of Gasprom Space Systems while, at the same time, being careful not to interrupt the current work of our company. In the end, we have succeeded in achieving both of these goals. I would like to make special note of the flexible approach and responsiveness of the whole Asteros team, their readiness to act quickly to changing requirements and meet tight deadlines.” – Vladimir Koshelkov, Gasprom Space Systems, Head of Automation.
